A team of shooters from our club, the Malta Air Rifle & Pistol Shooting Club which is affiliated with the Malta Shooting
Sport Federation participated in 3 shooting competitions held in Strassen, Luxembourg between 9 th &
13 th December 2014. These were the RIAC 1, RIAC 2 and the IBIS CUP.
The 5 member team was made up of;
Eleanor Bezzina & Josephine Galea Calleja Women Air Pistol
Alison Vella Women Air Rifle
Wayne Galea Men Air Rifle
Gianluca Azzopardi Spiteri Men Junior Air Rifle
All competitions abided by the ISSF 10 meter Air Rifle & Pistol Regulations. All shooters obtained respectable results considering that most of their scores exceeded those they normally score during Local competitions held at the Bidnija indoor range.
The scores were close or in Gianluca’s case exceeded the MQS set by the MOC for these athletes to qualify in coming June GSSE games. As expected Eleanor Bezzina, the current holder of the Gold in the GSSE (Small Nations Games) in the 10m Air Pistol discipline obtained the best achievements. She qualified for the finals in all 3 competitions and placed third winning bronze in the RIAC 2.
She placed 4 th in the RIAC 2 after a shoot out for the 3 rd place. She lost 3 rd place by only 0.2 of a point. Then she placed 6 th on the final day in the IBIS CUP.
These results augur well for next years GSSE games to be held in Iceland.

The Malta Sport Shooting Federation in collaboration with the Malta Air Rifle & Pistol Shooting Club organized a training camp for its junior elite shooter, Gianluca Azzopardi Spiteri. The training camp was financed by the Malta Olympic Committee trough its Youth Elite Athlete Scheme.
The training camp was held between Thursday 30th October 2014 and Thursday 6th November 2014 at the Larry Vella indoor ranges at Bidnija. It was conducted by Mr. Steve Downes a qualified ISSF coach who runs a shooting academy in the UK and has coached various International top shooters. Attending this training camp was Gianluca’s local coach Mr. John Galea.
This year Gianluca already participated in the Europeans held in Moscow in February where he achieved a satisfactory result and in the World Cup held in Munich last June. This training camp came at the right time before Gianluca flies to Luxembourg to compete in the Luxembourg open and in preparation to qualify for the Small Nations Games that are to be held coming June in Iceland.
